After the Graphene Flagship and the Human Brain Project, the next large-scale research and innovation initiative funded by the European Commission is the FET Quantum Technologies (QT) Flagship. Over a period of 10 years, the European Commission has allocated more than € 1 billion to advance research in this field for the benefit of the European community and its citizens.
In the ramp-up phase of the project, which will stretch over three years, the European Commission has selected 20 projects divided into three pillars. As members of the spearhead project in the pillar of metrology and sensoring, macQsimal partners are committed to apply a common core technology platform to develop sensors formed by atomic vapour cells realised as integrated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) at the wafer level. Through this approach five different types of miniaturised sensors will be developed: optically pumped magnetometers, atomic clocks, atomic gyroscopes, atomic GHz/THz sensors and images, and lastly, Rydberg-based gas sensors. These sensors will come to demonstrate degrees of sensitivity and accuracy largely superseding any existing sensors on the market today.
With the official endorsement of macQsimal and 19 other research projects as part of the FET QT Flagship in Vienna, work now starts to bring Europe at the forefront of the second quantum revolution.
